Jenny Alexander

Ten fascinating facts about me!

  1. Fair IsleI like living on the edge
I grew up in London, but my heart was in wild places by the sea - as soon as I was old enough, I went to join it! I spent 10 great years in the Shetland Isles, way off the North coast of Scotland, before moving to where I now live in Cornwall.
  2. The most amazing thing I’ve ever seen is the Northern Lights
    – we often saw them in the winter time in Shetland.
  3. By a spooky coincidence, the most amazing book I’ve ever read is ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman – but I’ve got lots of other favourite books, too.
  4. Me and my brother and sisters dancing in SpaceWhen I was growing up, I wanted to be an artist…
but then I got sidetracked and went to university instead of art school. Painting has always been my favourite hobby though.
  5. I had 2 sisters and 1 brother, but one of my sisters died.
  6. My name is shrinking!
I was Jennifer right up until I left university, then without so much as a by-your-leave everyone started to call me Jenny. I was Jenny when I had my first books published, though by then lots of people were copying my husband and calling me Jen. Nowadays, my publishers just call me J. ‘It works for Ms Rowling,’ they say…
  7. Various animals I love lions
I’ve got lots of pictures of lions on my study wall. My lions remind me not to be a scaredy-cat about trying new things and they make me feel better if I’ve been a bit fierce when something annoys me. If you’ve got a favourite animal, put some pictures of it on your wall – it could have something great to teach you.
  8. I also love crocodiles, lizards, snakes, dragonflies, eagles, owls and swans.
Being in my study is a bit like going on safari!
  9. I’ve got 2 sons and 2 daughters who are all grown up.
  10. Shintie the RabbitWe used to have a rabbit called Shintie who lived indoors.
His favourite pastimes were eating the paper and watching Neighbours. He died at the ripe old age (for a rabbit) of nine and a half.
